She lives in Colorado with her mom, my cousin (but in Hawaii all small kids call the older relatives ‘Aunty’ and ‘Uncle’, so I’m calling Zoe my niece), but was visiting Hawaii accompanied by her grandmother, so I met up with them at Kapiolani Park for some fun photos.  Zoe is so talkative and full of energy, and doesn’t like posing for photos (though she loves taking them with her toy camera!), so I mostly let her run around and play while I snapped photos of her. Tomorrow, I have a shoot with this darling 3-week-old girl! My first tiny-baby shoot! Exciting!

But today I couldn’t resist finishing a roll of black and white film after the planning session with her mom.

Ed and I did this before he left just to get more photos of us together, and it worked out great! It can almost be treated as a workshop where we all share techniques and ideas. The most recent of these tweetups was for photographer Marc Orbito and family. There were around 5-6 photographers there at Kakaako Waterfront Park, but I somehow managed to avoid catching them in my shots!

Besides weddings, I also love doing family photo shoots, so, once again, I got to photograph one of my favorite families in the world, the Hiratas! Jonathan (light blue overshirt) is one of my oldest friends and currently working in New York City, and I’ve been photographing his sister Jen and her two little boys for the past couple years now. It’s crazy how big they’ve gotten! This time, we did a sunset beach shoot at Kamaole Beach Park on Maui.

As you can tell from the photos, we all had a great time! Photographing families with young kids is still one of my favorite things to do.
